Greetings From A Younger Narenhan and UPSCAN








With the highest respect, I deeply treasure and cherish with utmost regard as a rare jewel of inestimable worth cradled in the sacred chambers of memory, to be greeted by Sir David B Katague. 


You, Sir, are not merely a firstborn dormer of the hallowed UP Men's South Dormitory but a living sentinel gilded with idealism, valor and fearless wisdom, and thus I pay homage to your indelible legacy—as a fledgling master of chemical wonders who transmuted equations into life’s elixir, as a chemistry instructor who infused minds and ignited the intellect with the truth of discernment, and as a kindred UPSCAN spirit and devoted follower, faithful apprentice and proud disciple of Fr. John Delaney whose voice still echoes in the chapels of Diliman.

How splendid it must have been to behold the Narra gauntlet of fellowship, the socials graced by the Women’s Club, the UPSCA gatherings where youthful ardor was wed with eternal faith, and the vibrant brotherhood and service which you so fervently embodied; truly, your life story is the unofficial hymn, and legendary saga etched into the very marrow of our beloved alma mater, and to be greeted by you, venerable pioneer and custodian of sacred memories, is to receive beautiful words of celebration - a torch of history, a benison of fortitude and a constant reminder that we, the younger progeny of Narra, stand upon the shoulders of giants like you who inspires many and is worthy of emulation.
May the heavens rain upon you and your illustrious family the grace, vitality, and grandeur you have so prodigiously shared with generations of Iskolars ng Bayan.

1. How many universities are there in the world?

The global total is a bit tricky to pin down exactly, as it changes over time and depends on definitions (e.g., whether colleges or online institutions are counted).

  • The World Higher Education Database (WHED) reported around 19,400 universities and higher education institutions globally in 2020 ECLBS.

  • Other sources suggest there are over 25,000, even up to 31,000 institutions worldwide CLJStatbase.

  • One projection notes that if current trends continue, the global total could surpass 30,000 universities by 2030 Number Analytics.

** Bottom line:** As of now, a reliable estimate is between 20,000 and 30,000 universities worldwide, with the exact figure varying by criteria and sources.

2. Ranking of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD)

UP Diliman is consistently the top-ranked university in the Philippines across several reputable global rankings:

  • UPD ranked #938 globally out of ~32,000 institutions Philstar.

Personal Note: I am a very proud alumnus of this University. In October, 1955, I obtained my Bachelor's of Science In Chemistry. Then after Graduation, I was appointed Instructor in Chemistry. I taught Chemistry to Pre-Med, Pre-Nursing and Engineering students. I was just about 2 years older than my most of my students, but they have to call me SIR.  Then in 1959-1960, I  started Graduate school for my Ph. D degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Illinois in Chicago. In 1962, I graduated with my M.S. degree. In 1964 I graduated with a Ph. D degree. The rest is history.

    Leandro Locsin- Filipino National Artist in Architecture

    Yesterday's Posting was about the life of Antoni Gaudi- God's Architect. Today's posting is another architect- A Filipino whose work I admired very much.

    Leandro Locsin, the National Artist for Architecture, turned brutalist concrete into something uniquely Filipino! He was known for his loved of the Brutalist type of Architecture( remember the award-winning Movie- The Brutalist). 
    👉 His most iconic work? The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)(above photo)— built in the 1960s, it fused modernist style with native design principles. Think: floating structures, open spaces, and “bahay kubo” vibes but in massive stone.

    🌀 Surprise: Locsin also designed churches, hotels, and even airports. His Church of the Holy Sacrifice in UP Diliman was the first round church with a suspended dome in the Philippines!


    In 1955, 💚Fr. John Delaney, S.J., then Catholic Chaplain at the University of the Philippines - Diliman, commissioned Locsin to design a chapel with an open plan and can easily accommodate 1,000 people. The Church of the Holy Sacrifice is the first round chapel in the Philippines to have an altar in the middle, and the first to have a thin shell concrete dome. The floor of the church was designed by Arturo Luz, the Stations of the Cross by Vicente Manansala and Ang Kiukok, and the cross by Napoleon Abueva, all of whom are now National Artists. Alfredo L. Juinio served as the building's structural engineer. Today, the church is recognized as a National Historical Landmark and a Cultural Treasure by the National Historical Institute (now the National Historical Commission of the Philippines) and the National Museum, respectively.

    Holy Saturday, Christian religious observance that ends the Lenten season, falling on the day before Easter Sunday. The observance commemorates the final day of Christ's death, which many Christians traditionally associate with his triumphant descent into hell or “to the dead”.

    This solemn Black Saturday, we pause in stillness, waiting in hope. As Christ lay in the tomb, His followers mourned—yet even in darkness, faith endured.
    A place of deep spiritual significance, Jaro Cathedral in Iloilo City stands as a beacon of devotion and heritage. Known formally as the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles, it is one of the few Marian shrines in the Visayas and holds a special place in the hearts of many. Its statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was canonically crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1981—the first and only Marian image in the Philippines to receive such an honor from a pope himself. To this day, pilgrims come to pray, reflect, and seek grace.
    In the quiet of this day, let us reflect on the hope that Easter brings—the promise of new life and everlasting grace.

    Lastly, In September 1948, one of the most intriguing Marian apparitions in the Philippines took place at the Carmelite Monastery in Lipa. A young novice, Sister Teresita Castillo, claimed she was praying in the convent garden when a radiant lady appeared, floating on a cloud. This mysterious figure, dressed in white and holding a golden rosary, introduced herself as the "Lady Mediatrix of All Grace."
    Over the course of fifteen apparitions, a shower of rose petals allegedly fell, with images of Jesus, Mary, and other biblical scenes miraculously appearing on them. The apparition stirred intense devotion and widespread attention.
    However, in the 1950s, Sister Teresing faced immense criticism and left the convent. An initial investigation dismissed the apparition as “non-supernatural,” but a twist came decades later. A bishop reportedly confessed on his deathbed that he was pressured to sign a dismissal of the apparition. In light of this, the case was reopened in 1991, leaving the phenomenon and its true nature an ongoing mystery.
